On 2 July, Secerna welcomed eight university students from across the UK and Ireland to our sixth annual taster day. Designed to inspire and empower future patent attorneys, the event offered a first-hand introduction to intellectual property and life within a private practice firm.
An Insight into Private Practice
The day gave students from a range of scientific disciplines and universities a genuine feel for Secerna’s culture and the day-to-day work of an IP professional.
Rather than just sitting through presentations, they were fully immersed in our collaborative culture. The day moved swiftly from industry insights into the profession, straight into hands-on experience with authentic legal tasks. We then wrapped up with an informal networking & Q&A session, giving them a relaxed space to ask our team about qualification exams and transitioning from academia.
This practical approach highlighted how scientific and engineering backgrounds provide a powerful foundation for a dynamic and rewarding career in intellectual property.

Bridging the Gap Between Science and Law
For many STEM undergraduates, Master’s, and PhD students, the route to becoming a patent attorney remains relatively unknown. Our annual taster day helps demystify the profession, demonstrating how analytical thinking can be directly applied to protecting innovation.
