Effective 1 June 2026, the Republic of Moldova has officially become the 40th member state of the European Patent Organisation (EPO), following its accession to the European Patent Convention (EPC).
This milestone marks a significant shift in the European intellectual property landscape. For patent applicants, Moldova transitions from its previous status as a "validation state" to a fully integrated "designation state."
What does this mean for your filing strategy?
The integration offers a more streamlined, cost-effective route for businesses looking to protect their innovations in the region:
-
Automatic Designation: All European patent applications (and PCT applications entering the European regional phase) filed on or after 1 June 2026 will automatically include the designation of the Republic of Moldova.
-
Reduced Administrative Costs: Applicants will no longer need to pay separate, additional validation fees to extend their patent protection to Moldova, reducing overall filing expenses.
-
Expanded Market Reach: A single European patent application now provides a seamless path to securing intellectual property coverage across 40 European nations.
Further Information
The new designation rules apply to all applications filed on or after 1 June 2026. For existing applications filed prior to this date, the previous validation system remains in effect.
